Em conversa: MGMT (2)

Continuamos a publicação de uma entrevista com Ben Goldwasser dos MGMT, que serviu de base ao texto ‘O desafio de encontrar quem resista às modas’, publicado na ediçãoo de 18 de Dezembro do DN Gente.

O som de Congratulations seria assim uma tão grande surpresa face a Oracular Spectacular? Na verdade já havia janelas no primeiro disco a sugerir caminhos que o segundo acabou por tomar...
Sim, de facto. Quando o álbum saiu houve quem dissesse que só tinha duas ou três boas canções. E que o resto era para encher... Não estavam a ouvir o álbum. Estavam à procura de hits. Hoje, nos nossos concertos, as pessoas mostram que estão mais dentro do primeiro álbum e estão a entrar no segundo... Estão a entrar nas canções. As coisas por vezes sabem melhor se não gostamos tanto delas a principio e, com o tempo, aprendemos depois a ouvir. Há até blogues que tentam chamar atenção a pessoas para discos que nunca foram populares, alguns com uns 20 ou 30 anos... O que é triste depois é a forma como as pessoas se ligam a uma banda porque lembra isto ou aquilo e, pouco depois, mudam-se para outra coisa qualquer... As pessoas por vezes não gastam tempo suficiente com uma música para saberem se de facto é ou não boa.

Acha que isso é um reflexo da nova atitude “like” da era Facebook? As pessoas ouvem mesmo a música ou seguem as modas?
Sim, é verdade. Não sei se isso vai mudar. Mas é preciso tempo para digerir a música. O que há de bom na Internet é o facto de termos tanto por onde escolher. E tudo assim tem sempre uma hipótese. Mas há tanto a acontecer, que muitas das coisas nunca têm hipóteses...

Em Siberian Breaks, do álbum Congratulations, apresentam uma composição invulgarmente longa (para os padrões actuais em domínio pop/rock, entenda-se)...
Nunca planeámos exactamente fazer uma canção longa. Fomos trabalhando nela e foi ficando assim... Mas para nós não é estranho ouvir uma música tão longa. Há quem seja um ouvinte crítico e que vai além dos hypes do momento. Estamos a tentar encontra-los.
